Hey Barista
An online magazine from the global coffee community
In this wild and unpredictable world, there are only a handful of universal truths we can be sure of. One of them, if you’ll allow an oat drink company to get philosophical for a moment, is this…
…your barista is cooler than you.
You probably know this already, and it’s probably why you walk into your neighborhood coffee shop with a hint of nervousness and tend to freeze up when it’s time to make small talk at the register. “I can’t believe another dog groomer opened up across the street,” you might blurt out, not remembering the lines you rehearsed earlier that morning. And your barista—while effortlessly preparing your delicious oat drink latte—might say, “Yeah, I know. It’s going to be great for me and my pug.” And then, because baristas are impeccable conversationalists, they follow up with a question like, “What kind of dog do you have?”
At this point you’re in dangerous waters because you don’t own a dog, and this would be a weird admission because it obviously begs the question, “Then why do you care about the dog groomer across the street?” So you brilliantly answer a different question altogether and say, “Yeah, this weather is insane.”
Don’t panic.
You didn’t completely ruin your chances of learning more about that unbelievably cool and interesting barista. In fact, by venturing deep into the subpages of an oat drink company website, you completely turned your luck around, because this is where you learn about Hey Barista.
We can’t take full credit, or really much credit, for the magazine. It’s sort of something we helped build and then turned over the keys to these really cool people.
Hey Barista is a magazine built on the simple premise that baristas are some of the coolest and most interesting people around—and, ergo, there should be a place for their brilliant ideas, perspectives, art, and general musings. Sometimes the magazine is about coffee, but most of the time it’s not. For instance, Hey Barista sat down with a Hamburg-based barista to talk about the niche world of German bodybuilding. The magazine also featured the artwork of an incredible barista from Melbourne, and it got some stellar music recommendations from a Philadelphia coffee shop called Win Win Coffee Bar.
We can’t take full credit, or really much credit, for the magazine. It’s sort of something we helped build and then turned over the keys to these really cool people. And though you can get a glimpse into their lives and livelihoods at Hey-barista.com, we still encourage you to overcome those small-talk jitters and get to know your neighborhood barista in person.
